Xarelto, generic name rivaroxaban, is a blood thinner that is typically used to reduce the risk of stroke and prevent deep vein thrombosis.

Xarelto is commonly prescribed to

  • Treat blood clots in the veins of your legs (deep vein thrombosis or DVT) or lungs (pulmonary embolism or PE).
  • Reduce the risk of blood clots from recurring in people who continue to be at risk for DVT or PE after receiving treatment for blood clots for at least 6 months.
  • Reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people who have a medical condition called atrial fibrillation that is not caused by a heart valve problem. With atrial fibrillation, part of the heart does not beat the way it should. This can lead to the formation of blood clots, which can travel to the brain, causing a stroke, or to other parts of the body.
  • Individuals who have had hip or knee replacement surgery

XARELTO CONTROVERSY AND LAWSUITS

  • While Xarelto is a drug that has saved lives, it cannot be denied that many people who have used the drug have suffered damages allegedly due to misinformation, unnecessary and biased prescriptions, and other negligent acts of the Manufacturer Bayer, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen.
  • The ProPublica analysis has stated that; Pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers gave approximately $2 billion in payments and perks to more than 600,000 doctors in the United States in 2014 and 2015. While some of these payments were for “gifts and royalties,” the $2 billion also covered consulting, travel, and promotional speaking expenses, as well as meals.
  • The analysis also revealed that doctors who received such payments and perks were slightly more likely to prescribe the brand-name drugs pushed by their generous pharmaceutical industry benefactors than doctors who didn’t receive such payments and that, in 2015, pharmaceutical companies spent more money on doctor payments for Xarelto than any other prescription drug—a whopping $28.4 million.
  • Since Xarelto was approved by the FDA in 2011 and 2012 (for different uses), more than 4,500 former Xarelto patients or their surviving family members have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers, claiming that the companies failed to adequately warn patients about the potential for uncontrollable internal bleeding and other serious side effects. Plaintiffs in certain lawsuits have even alleged that Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals were aware of the risks of Xarelto, but chose to misrepresent the safety and effectiveness of the drug to patients.
  • While Xarelto has been praised for its ability to react quickly against blood clots, the lack of a viable antidote has put many patients in danger. Patients who take Xarelto can experience life-threatening bleeding from small injuries that would normally clot quickly, and some patients have even suffered from severe internal Hemorrhaging or brain bleeding.
  • From 2013 to 2016, the FDA required five updates to Xarelto’s warning label, stating that consumers were not sufficiently warned of all the potential side effects. Xarelto updated the Warning Label as follows:-
August 2013: Black-box warning added about the increased risk of spinal bleeds.
January 2014: Warnings about the lack of an antidote and that Xarelto should not be used by patients with prosthetic heart valves.
March 2014: Additional information added for healthcare professionals on limiting spinal bleeds.
December 2014: Addition of new adverse reactions, thrombocytopenia and hepatitis.
May 2016: Warning of an increased bleeding risk with SSRI and SNRI antidepressants.
As of early 2019, over 23,000 Xarelto lawsuits are being handled in MDL No. 2592 (IN RE: Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) Products Liability Litigation) in the Eastern District of Louisiana. More than 1,950 additional Xarelto lawsuits have been filed under a mass tort program in the Philadelphia Complex Litigation Center (CLC).
